Ph.D. in Anthropology, 2006, University of California, San Diego
M.A. in Anthropology, 2000,University of California, San Diego
B.A. in Psychology and Political Philosophy,1994, University of Redlands
I started my academic career at the University of Redlands, where I double majored
in psychology and political philosophy through the Johnston Center for Individualized
Learning. After receiving my B.A. in 1994, I spent 14 months overseas, mostly as a
volunteer on Kibbutz Ketura in Southern Israel, but also spending a summer
backpacking from Sweden to Egypt. Realizing that as much as I loved going new
places, seeing new sights, and doing new things, what I really enjoyed the most
was meeting people, talking to them, and trying to understand our similarities and
differences. Along with several fortuitous twists of fate, this led me to apply to
graduate programs in anthropology when I returned to the United States. I started
graduate school at San Diego State University (SDSU) in 1997, where I received a
valuable introduction to four-field anthropology, before moving across town to begin
the Ph.D. program at the University or California, San Diego (UCSD).
