Jonathan S. Marion received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego where he was trained in sociocultural and psychological anthropology. Through his research into competitive ballroom and salsa dancing throughout the USA, UK, and Europe, he explores issues of performance, embodiment, gender, globalization, ritual, and activity-based constructions of personal and collective meanings and identities. Stemming from this work Marion has become highly involved in visual anthropology, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for Visual Anthropology, and his ethnographic photography features prominently in his first book, Ballroom: Culture and Costume in Competitive Dance (Berg 2008).
